Die B-17 Flying Fortress ist nach wie vor einer der bekanntesten alliierten Bomber des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Obwohl es in jedem Kriegsschauplatz diente, flog dieser robuste und gut bewaffnete schwere Bomber insbesondere im Europäischen Einsatzgebiet (ETO) mit der renommierten 8. Luftwaffe in die Geschichtsbücher ein.

Mit seinem einzigen Maschinengewehr, das durch den Propellerbogen feuerte, war es das erste Flugzeug, das über diese geniale mechanisch synchronisierte Kriegswaffe verfügte. Der Eindekker betete auf dem unbewaffneten und langsameren Spotter-Flugzeug der britischen Streitkräfte und erzielte mit seiner agilen Manövrierfähigkeit und neu gestalteten Waffe viele Kills an der Westfront. Im Laufe der Kriegsjahre und der Entwicklung und Weiterentwicklung der Flugzeugtechnologie wurde die Fokker E.III Eindekker obsolet und die Fokker-Geißel war nicht mehr.
